One of the ways to be proactive about safety is by staying informed of who is living and working in your neighborhood. A sex offender registry is a list of all convicted sex offenders in a state. Sex offender registries generally include the offender's address, physical appearance, and criminal history.
May a sex offender use a social networking website, email, internet chat room, or instant messaging? Iowa Chapter A, Sex Offender Registry, does not prohibit registrants from having social networking, email, internet chat room, or instant messaging accounts; however, registrants are required to report any and all internet identifiers to the Iowa Sex Offender Registry. Specific websites may have their own policies regarding use by convicted sex offenders.
Sex-offender-locator apps proudly boast that they can help users find sex offenders in their local area. Sex offender locator apps take this freely available data and repurpose it. After loading the app on your phone, you are presented with a map of your surrounding area and an icon, such as the commonly used blue dot, to show your own position.
But some criminal justice reform advocates oppose the bill, saying it may actually make it harder for people to get off of the registry. Currently, all people convicted of most sex crimes must register as a sex offender. Anyone convicted of sexual contact with a minor who is at least 15 years old can petition the courts to be removed from the registry, provided he or she meets a number of criteria.

The email form only requires the message. However, we encourage you to include your email address and other contact details if you'll be using it to submit a tip for a particular sex offender. Your tip may be provided to the appropriate law enforcement agency for follow-up investigation.

Sexual violence is a significant public health problem in the United States. In an effort to decrease the incidence of sexual assault, legislators have passed regulatory laws aimed at reducing recidivism among convicted sexual offenders. As a result, sex offenders living in the United States are bound by multiple policies, including registration, community notification, monitoring via a global positioning system, civil commitment, and residency, loitering, and Internet restrictions.
