Sexual assault in the American military surged in the last two years, driven almost entirely by a 50 percent increase in assaults on women in uniform, according to a survey released on Thursday by the Defense Department. That was an increase of 38 percent from the previous survey in The issue took on added political visibility in March when Senator Martha McSally, Republican of Arizona, said publicly that she had been raped by a superior officer and had suffered numerous sexual assaults while serving in the Air Force.

The criminal justice system includes a wide range of activities from the investigation of a possible crime, to a legal determination of guilt or innocence. The process of going through the criminal justice system can seem overwhelming at times because there are so many moving pieces and players. Understanding a few key aspects of the process can take away some of the unknowns and help you feel more prepared. After the initial report is made to law enforcement, a survivor can decide whether or not they would like to move forward with the investigation, a process referred to as pressing charges.
Victims dropped out of the investigation in about one-third of the cases we reviewed. In almost all instances, the case ended there. While some victims explicitly choose not to pursue charges, advocates and others say police treatment of victims plays a big role in whether they stay involved in their case.
