Sexuality Research and Social Policy. This special issue on Sexual Commerce: Troubling Meanings, Policies, and Practices aims to intervene in contemporary debates over the marketplace of sex for sale by presenting new research on trends in commercialized sex and its regulation, as embedded in wider social, political, and economic practices. As the global sex industry is growing in size and visibility, new forms of commercial sexual exchange are emerging as a problem of governance, internationally and nationally.
A nationally recognized scholar, UVic sociologist Cecilia Benoit has illuminated the need for equitable treatment of marginalized populations, especially women, for more than 25 years. Benoit will also publish a peer-informed practical manual for training of sex workers as social justice advocates that will be publicly available. Her research has given voice to people who are not usually heard.

For social scientists, legal scholars, and feminists not to mention state actors who have been attentive to the issue of prostitution, a key question has concerned what societies should do about it. Underlying this dilemma are a number of important ethical and political concerns: Is there anything inherently wrong with the exchange of sex for money? Should prostitution be considered a crime? In the mids, while serving as a participant-observer on the San Francisco Task Force on Prostitution, I got the chance to directly witness the ways in which policymakers and local activists responded to these questions.
