The Twin Cam proved to be an excellent platform for the competition machines in both touring car and eventually rallying guise, and the Escorts campaigned by the Ford works teams racked up wins around the globe, becoming an iconic symbol of plucky British racing prowess in the process.
With rally racing pedigree coursing through its veins and stories of incredible achievement, the Escort is much more of a legend then it may appear. Introduced as the successor to the Anglia, the Escort was at first a humble and comfortable family car that offered practicality and style on a budget. The fun really began when the RS was introduced.
The Escort is the second biggest selling car in UK history - with more than four million sold over a 35 year period. But while most were humble family cars, Ford was known for its motorsport and the Escort was one of its most successful track vehicles. We were absolutely thrilled to achieve such a great price for the Escort, and for it to be an auction record is even more exciting.
Based on the loved and celebrated Ford Escort platform, which gained its storied history in European rally racing, this Ford Escort Mk2 RS is quite unlike its stage-ready counterparts. It was designed to compete in tarmac events, but unfortunately those are quite lacking now stateside, so instead of converting it into a gravel machine, I had my team at Hoonigan Racing Division extend on its tarmac capabilities and develop it into the ultimate rear wheel-drive Gymkhana car. Mechanically, this Escort shares all the best parts of a top-level WRC-spec tarmac build, yet coupled with a specialized suspension setup with Gymkhana tricks in mind.

An incredibly rare Ford Escort is set to fetch up to quarter of a million pounds when it goes up for auction later this month. The red and gold two-door saloon is an early example of the Escort Twin Cam, which enjoyed sporting success in the late 60s and early s. The team fitted the car with a Cosworth-build FVA Formula 2 engine and carried out various modifications to the bodyshell to meet their racing needs.
Aggressive lines, wide wheel arches, beefy side skirts, bonnet vents and that iconic whale tail are standard features of the undeniably excellent Rallye Sport. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise to learn that his immaculate RS has been subjected to a bare shell respray, although he is keen to point out that the work occurred during time that his car spent in the custody of its previous owner. Powdercoated in a shade of anthracite, the inchers replace gold-painted rims that the car was sitting on when Robert first encountered it two years ago.
